Two Dutch interior brands, Marie-Stella-Maris and Maison Deux, have joined their creative forces to develop a remarkable new product that perfectly combines stylish design and craftsmanship.

Read the interview below with Pia and Woes Weinberg, the founders of Maison Deux.

Hi Woes and Pia! Who are you, what is Maison Deux, and what do you do at Maison Deux?

"We are Pia and Woes Weinberg, partners in life! We started Maison Deux in 2016 after the birth of our twins Boet & Pup. After losing our daughter Pup, we wanted to translate that experience into something positive, creating a new brand that brings the world of parent and child together. A home interior label with designs for both generations (House of Two).

To this day, you can still see that reflected in our designs. We mainly focus on rugs, blankets, and cushions. We have our own collection, but also collaborate with brands like Miffy, Moooi, Peanuts, and now Marie-Stella-Maris.

Pia is responsible for everything you see, from the products to the communication, and Woes supports this with production sourcing, commerce, and operations. We complement each other well naturally, if we say so ourselves ;-)”

How is it to work together as partners?

'“It’s amazing to work together as partners, especially because we each naturally take on different responsibilities. As colleagues on the road, we can say what we think without any 'politics,' and mixing this with family life makes it a beautiful adventure.”

How would you describe the style of Maison Deux?

“The style of Maison Deux is a blend of modern and classical influences. We look at what's happening in the world of interior design, but also take inspiration from fashion. ‘Spice up... your sofa’ is our message, and you can see this reflected in colorful, contemporary designs translated into high-quality products"

.”Which products did you start with, and how did it evolve?

“We started with the Iconic Rockers (a rocking horse in the shape of a cloud, moon, and watermelon). We launched these at Colette during Paris Design Week. Since then, we've slowly grown into a mix of rugs and textiles. That’s where our focus is now, but we’re always thinking about what else could fit.”

Are there any trends or developments in the design world you are tapping into?

“After the pandemic, we noticed that people are craving more color. Before, it was mostly soft and pastel tones, but now things can pop more. Of course, this still needs to be balanced with a solid base, but the accents can bring more color and positivity.”

Can you talk more about the sustainable production at Maison Deux?

''We produce our products in India and Europe. To ensure that the working conditions and quality of the products meet our expectations, we have a local team that supervises the entire production. We also work with GoodWeave, Woolmark and Oeko-Tex, among others. This way we guarantee the right working conditions (no child labor, for example) and quality of the materials used in our products.''

Why do you consider sustainable production so important?

''For us, sustainable and responsible production is a precondition for creating products that we want to sell to others as a brand and as people.''

Why a collaboration with Marie-Stella-Maris?

"Marie-Stella-Maris and Maison Deux share the same standards and values: to make products that contribute to a better world and make it ever so slightly more beautiful."

Can you tell us more about the blanket you designed in collaboration with us?

“The Marie-Stella-Maris x Maison Deux blanket is made from 100% New Zealand wool, extra thick, with fringes. It’s produced in Lithuania and carries the Oeko-Tex, Woolmark, and Wool Integrity NZ labels.”

With every blanket sold, 20 euros goes to sustainable water projects. What does clean water mean to you?

“A basic necessity. In the Netherlands, it’s something we take for granted, but unfortunately, that’s absolutely not the case in all countries, sometimes even closer than you’d think. So for us, it’s wonderful to contribute to this cause in this way.”

And finally... What’s your favorite scent from Marie-Stella-Maris?

“No.03 Poivre Noir Frais is our favorite scent, and it’s spread throughout our home. We especially love the hand soap, and the kids do too! :-)”
