What is Perfume Layering?
Perfume layering is a technique where you apply different fragrances on top of each other to create a new, unique scent. The idea is that each layer adds its own distinctive note, resulting in a complex and dynamic fragrance blend. This method allows you to develop a fully personalized scent that reflects your preferences, mood, or personality.
How does Perfume Layering work?
Before you start perfume layering, it's helpful to understand the fragrance pyramid. A perfume is built in three layers: top notes, heart notes, and base notes.
Top notes are the notes you smell first, like citrus or spices, and they usually fade after about 30 minutes.
Heart notes such as floral or fruity accords, form the core of the fragrance and last around 2-4 hours.
Base notes like wood, musk, or amber, are the longest-lasting, often lingering for 6-8 hours.
In perfume layering, you start with a base perfume and complement it with one or more additional fragrances. A common approach is to start with a heavier perfume and finish with a lighter one, essentially creating a 'fragrance pyramid' with multiple fragrances. This method ensures the lighter scent isn't overwhelmed by the heavier one.
For example, a warm base like vanilla or musk can be paired with a floral or citrus scent for a fresh touch. The beauty of this technique lies in its endless possibilities for experimentation.
