Smell and emotion are strongly connected. You smell a lot. You smell the city, you smell coffee, you smell your partner's perfume. All those memories are stored in the back part of your brain, which is the oldest part of your brain and is also known as the reptilian brain. That is why fragrances can bring up deep and emotional memories. You can smell something and instantly be transported back to that beautiful place in your thoughts.
We interviewed fragrance expert Karima Abdellatif about scent: how it's constructed, how it can influence your state of mind, and which fragrances create a positive mood. Fragrance is more than just an everyday experience; it can be a powerful source of emotions and memories.
A fragrance is typically constructed with top, heart, and base notes. This is called an olfactory pyramid. You first encounter the top of the fragrance. It's the initial scent you perceive. Citrus or fruit is often used in this stage. Then, you move on to the heart of the fragrance, where you often smell flowers and aromatic, woody notes. The ingredients in the base essentially make the fragrance whole. You often find musk, wood, vanilla, and amber in this stage.
Ingredients in this pyramid can affect your mood. Citrus, for example, provides a lot of energy. Lavender calms. White flowers give a voluptuous and sexy feeling to a fragrance. A fragrance can also empower you. These are often statement fragrances with rich ingredients.
Those are definitely scents with citrus. Citrus provides energy; it makes you feel refreshed. I always say: if you wake up in the morning, and it's cold and dark, and you'd rather stay in bed, wear a fragrance with a lot of citrus. It's like your morning alarm.

My favorite scent is definitely No.03 Poivre Noir Frais. I really love scents with geranium. On one hand, geranium is very relaxing, but on the other hand, because it has a bit of a minty scent, it's invigorating. And when I smell that scent, it reminds me of my time at Marie-Stella-Maris.
When it comes to different rooms, I recommend calming scents for the bedroom. Lavender scents are perfect for this. Lavender calms and relaxes, promoting a good night's sleep. If you have a very large living room that feels chilly, use warm scents to make that space feel cozy. Conversely, sparkling and light scents can make a room feel more spacious.
With every purchase at Marie-Stella-Maris, you contribute directly to sustainable water projects around the world. Through the Marie-Stella-Maris Foundation, we collaborate with organizations that realize these water projects. One of these partners is Project Maji: a non-profit organization that provides sustainable, solar-powered water solutions to communities in Sub-Saharan Africa.
